Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive comparative study between the philosophy of René Descartes (1596–1650), based on "methodological doubt" as a tool for reaching epistemic certainty, and the philosophy of "Inspiration Economy" which relies on "observation" and "learning through practice" as fundamental mechanisms for exploring latent human capacities and transforming them into economic and social value. The comparison goes beyond mere doubt and observation to encompass broader methodological dimensions: from the Cartesian "Cogito" to "inspiration" as a foundation for human existence, from analytical reductionism to engagement with complexity, from the solitary knower to the collective practitioner, and from absolute certainty to contextual probability.
Despite a temporal gap of more than four centuries and the difference in epistemic fields (pure philosophy versus applied social economics), the comparison reveals deep methodological intersections, most notably the principled rejection of untested postulates, reliance on the human mind as a central tool of knowledge, and the pursuit of transcending immediate material givens. Conversely, fundamental differences emerge in the purpose of knowledge (theoretical certainty in Descartes versus practical change in Buheji), the tool of knowledge (abstract mental contemplation versus field observation and experimentation), the view of the self (the isolated thinking self-versus the socially interactive self), and the nature of certainty (absolute and final versus relative and adaptive).
The paper concludes that the Cartesian method of doubt nourishes the Inspiration Economy (IE) by providing a critical ground for reviewing traditional economic assumptions, while the IE nourishes Cartesian philosophy by offering a practical model for applying rationality to complex social problem-solving and testing its concepts in the field of application. The paper recommends building a hybrid methodological framework that integrates critical doubt with applied observation, developing quantitative and qualitative indicators for measuring inspiration, and expanding the applications of Inspiration Labs to include philosophical and educational domains.
