Representation of Indian Society in Contemporary Cinema
Abstract
Contemporary Indian cinema, encompassing Bollywood and regional industries, serves as both a mirror and a molder of society. It reflects the complexities, aspirations, and contradictions of modern India, while simultaneously shaping public attitudes and social discourse. This article critically examines how Indian society is represented in recent films, analyzing themes such as family, gender, caste, class, marginalized communities, and changing cultural values. Drawing on a wide range of cinematic examples and scholarly perspectives, the article explores both the progressive and problematic aspects of these representations, highlighting cinema’s role as a powerful agent of social commentary and change.
